Overview
Four private days combining a full day in Fes el-Bali with a medieval historian, the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, and two nights at a luxury camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes — the most dramatic short circuit in Morocco.
Fes and the Sahara are Morocco's two most compelling experiences — and they are only 420km apart. This four-day private circuit packs both into a coherent journey without rushing either. Day one is given entirely to Fes el-Bali: the Karaouine mosque-university, the Chouara tanneries, the kissaria souk — all with a university-trained historian who has spent twenty years in these lanes. Day two crosses the Middle Atlas through cedar forests where Barbary macaques sit by the roadside, then descends through the Ziz palm valley to the Erg Chebbi dunes for a golden-hour camel ride. Two nights in the desert gives you a free day: sunrise dune climb, sandboarding, a 4x4 excursion to the Khamlia gnaoua village. On Day 4 we return to Fes via a different route through the Ziz gorge and the market town of Er Rachidia.
This is our most requested four-day itinerary from Fes airport — it combines the two things travellers most want to see, and leaves neither one feeling shortchanged.

Day 1 · Fes el-Bali with the medieval historian
Fes medinaPrivate airport pickup and check-in at a riad inside Fes el-Bali. Full day on foot with our medieval historian: the Bab Bou Jeloud blue gate, the Bou Inania madrasa (14th-century carved stucco and cedarwood), the Karaouine mosque-university (founded 859 AD — the world's oldest continuously operating university), the Chouara tanneries from a private rooftop terrace, and the kissaria textile souk. Lunch in a Fassi riad kitchen with a family. Evening at leisure — rooftop mint tea and an early dinner.

Day 2 · Fes → Middle Atlas cedar forest → Ziz Valley → Merzouga
via Ifrane · Azrou · Ziz gorge · 420kmEarly departure south through the cedar forest of Ifrane — a cool, European-feeling landscape of ski chalets, oak parks and cedars where Barbary macaques sit on the roadside. Lunch in the mountain town of Midelt, then south through the Ziz gorge — a dramatic canyon where the river has carved through the Atlas — and down the long Ziz palm valley to the edge of the Sahara. Arrive at Merzouga village by late afternoon; your camel team is waiting at the dune edge for a one-hour golden-hour ride into Erg Chebbi. Berber dinner under the stars with gnaoua music.

Day 3 · A full day in the Sahara
Erg ChebbiPredawn alarm for the dune sunrise climb — 180m up the slip-face in about 45 minutes, worth every step for the view of the Atlas on the horizon and the erg turning gold below you. Breakfast in camp. Entirely free day: sandboard the dune faces, join a 4x4 excursion to the Khamlia village of gnaoua musicians (30 minutes), browse the fossil and mineral market in Erfoud, or simply sit on the camp terrace watching the shadows move across the dunes. Second sunset over the erg, second Berber dinner, second night of extraordinary quiet and a sky dense with stars.

Day 4 · Merzouga → Ziz Gorge → Er Rachidia → Fes
Return via Midelt · 420kmFinal sunrise from the dune crest, breakfast and farewells. We return to Fes on a slightly different route: north through the Ziz gorge with a stop at the viewpoint, a short browse of the Tuesday market at Er Rachidia, lunch at Midelt in the cedar zone, and back through Ifrane and Azrou — watching for the macaques again. Arrive in Fes by early evening, in good time for an airport transfer or a final medina rooftop dinner.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
Is "Fes & the Sahara — 4 Days" private or a group tour?
100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own driver, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.
Can I change the dates or itinerary?
Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Add a day, swap a riad, change the start city — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.
How fit do I need to be?
Easy. Light walking on medina cobblestones, plus optional activities you can opt in or out of on the day.
When should I book?
For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or hot-air balloon, book 8–12 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.
Is four days enough for both Fes and the Sahara?
Four days is tight but very manageable with a private driver — you spend one full day in Fes and two full nights in the desert, with no compressed rushing. If you have a fifth day we recommend adding either a second Fes day (artisan quarter, Andalusian quarter) or a longer desert experience with a 4x4 loop to the Iriki lake bed. We'll re-quote either extension in 24 hours.
What is the road like between Fes and Merzouga?
Entirely paved — there is no off-road driving on this route. The journey is 420km and takes about five to six hours driving time including stops; we break it with scenic pauses in the cedar forest, a lunch stop in Midelt and a brief gorge viewpoint. The scenery changes dramatically every hour, making the drive itself part of the experience.
Does this tour work as an extension of the Imperial Cities circuit?
Perfectly. Many clients combine our 8-day Imperial Cities tour with this 4-day Fes & Sahara loop — arriving in Marrakech, doing the imperial circuit to Fes, then heading to the desert before flying home from Fes. We price the full combined journey at a small discount.
