Overview

Three days from Marrakech over the High Atlas and down the palm-fringed Draa Valley to the golden dunes south of Zagora — the most accessible edge of the Moroccan Sahara.

The Draa Valley is Morocco's longest river corridor: 200km of date palms, kasbah villages, and ksour (fortified granaries) running south from Ouarzazate to the edge of the Sahara at M'Hamid. We take three days to do it properly — crossing the High Atlas via the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass, overnighting in a UNESCO kasbah at Aït Ben Haddou, and spending a sunset and sunrise on the dunes south of Zagora before returning through the valley on an alternative route.

This is our most popular short desert trip. The driving days are manageable, the landscapes are extraordinary, and Zagora's dunes are genuine Sahara without the long haul to Merzouga.

Trip highlights

  • Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m)
  • Sunset on UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou kasbah
  • Drive the Draa Valley's 200km of date palms and ancient ksour
  • Camel ride into the dunes south of Zagora at golden hour
  • Overnight at a private camp with a Berber dinner under the stars
  • Return via Ouarzazate film studios

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Is "Zagora & the Draa Desert" private or a group tour?

100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own driver, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.

Can I change the dates or itinerary?

Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Add a day, swap a riad, change the start city — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.

How fit do I need to be?

Easy. Light walking on medina cobblestones, plus optional activities you can opt in or out of on the day.

When should I book?

For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or hot-air balloon, book 8–12 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.

Is the Zagora desert as impressive as Merzouga?

Different rather than lesser. Zagora's dunes are smaller and closer to the Atlas — easier to reach and genuinely uncrowded. Merzouga has Morocco's highest dunes (180m) and a longer tradition of Saharan camps. We recommend Zagora for a first desert experience and Merzouga for those who want the full immersion.
