Saïdia (Arabic: سعيدية, also written Saidia) is a coastal city of roughly 12,000 permanent residents on Morocco's north-eastern Mediterranean coast, approximately 60 km north of Oujda and 13 km west of the Algerian border. Its beach — a continuous arc of 14 km of fine golden sand backed by pine forests and a modern marina — is the longest unbroken beach on the Moroccan Mediterranean and among the best in North Africa, recognised with a Blue Flag certification for water quality and beach management. The Mediterranean at Saïdia is warmer, calmer and more suitable for swimming and watersports than the Atlantic: sea temperature reaches 26–28°C in July and August, with gentle surf and clear water to depths suitable for snorkelling. The city was developed from the early 2000s as part of Morocco's Plan Azur coastal tourism programme, adding a large marina, golf courses and resort hotels to what was previously a small fishing village and summer retreat for eastern Moroccan families. The area around Saïdia — the Moulouya river estuary immediately to the west — is one of the most important bird migration sites on the western Mediterranean flyway.

What makes Saïdia's beach exceptional among Moroccan coastal resorts?

Saïdia offers 14 km of unbroken fine sand with Blue Flag water quality certification — among the longest certified beaches in North Africa. The Mediterranean sea at Saïdia is distinctly warmer and calmer than Morocco's Atlantic coast: summer temperatures of 26–28°C, gentle surf, and clear, shallow water for several hundred metres make it the country's premier sea-swimming destination. The pine-backed beach and absence of heavy surf distinguish it from Agadir or Essaouira.

Saïdia Marina and watersports

The purpose-built marina completed as part of Morocco's Plan Azur development accommodates leisure craft and operates as a base for kayaking, pedalo hire, sailing lessons and glass-bottomed boat trips along the coast. The marina promenade has restaurants, cafés and evening entertainment during the summer season.

Moulouya river estuary and birdwatching

The Moulouya estuary, 8 km west of Saïdia, is a Ramsar-listed wetland and one of the most important bird sites on the western Mediterranean flyway. Flamingos, glossy ibis, spoonbills and hundreds of wader species use the estuary in autumn and spring migration (March–May and August–October). The estuary mouth and the reed beds upstream are accessible by track from the coast road.

Oriental region interior — Berkane and the citrus groves

Fifteen kilometres inland, Berkane is the centre of Morocco's premier mandarin and orange citrus-growing region; the Beni Snassen mountains behind it offer short walks through orchards and gorges with views over the Mediterranean and Algeria. A half-day circuit from Saïdia through the citrus groves and the Zegzel gorge is one of the best inland day trips on the north-eastern coast.

Saïdia — common questions

Is Saïdia better for swimming than Agadir?+

For sea swimming specifically, yes — the Mediterranean at Saïdia is warmer (26–28°C in summer versus 20–22°C at Agadir), calmer and with gentler surf. Agadir has a longer tourist infrastructure and more sun year-round; Saïdia has the better swimming conditions and a quieter, less-developed atmosphere outside the marina zone.

What is the Plan Azur development at Saïdia?+

Plan Azur was a Moroccan government programme launched in 2001 to develop six coastal tourism zones. The Saïdia 'Blue Coast' resort was one of these, resulting in the construction of the marina, golf courses, resort hotels and an expanded beach promenade from the mid-2000s onwards. It has given Saïdia a dual character: the modern marina zone alongside the older Moroccan family resort town.

Can I see flamingos near Saïdia?+

Yes — the Moulouya estuary, 8 km west of Saïdia, holds flamingos year-round with peak numbers in autumn and spring migration. Greater flamingos, along with spoonbills, glossy ibis and a wide range of waders, use the estuary's mudflats and reed beds. The best access is via the coastal track from the beach road west of town.

When does Saïdia get busy?+

July and August are the peak season, when the beach fills with Moroccan and Algerian families and accommodation books up well in advance. June and September are the best balance of warm sea temperatures (24–26°C) and smaller crowds. Outside the summer season, Saïdia is quiet and pleasant for birdwatching and coastal walking.
