Ouarzazate vs Merzouga: Kasbah Country or Saharan Dunes?

Ouarzazate is Morocco's film capital and the gateway to the kasbahs of the Draa and Dadès valleys; Merzouga is the door to Erg Chebbi, the country's most spectacular Saharan dune field. Both lie on the great southern circuit — but they offer very different experiences.

The road south from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) deposits you in a landscape of biblical kasbah country: mud-brick fortresses, date-palm oases, dried riverbeds and villages the colour of terracotta. Ouarzazate — 200 km from the pass — sits at the confluence of the Draa and Dadès rivers and has become the unlikely film capital of Africa: Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones and The Mummy were all shot here or at the nearby ksar of Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary beauty. Drive a further 350 km south-east along the Route des Kasbahs and you reach Merzouga at the foot of Erg Chebbi — 22 km of orange dunes that tower to 150 m and glow amber at sunrise and crimson at dusk. The two destinations are not rivals; they are chapters in the same story. But if your time is limited and you must choose one, understanding what each offers is essential.

Our verdict

Which should you choose?

Choose Ouarzazate if you are short on time and want a taste of southern Morocco's kasbah landscape without the full 10-hour commitment to Merzouga — a day at Aït Benhaddou and a night in Ouarzazate is genuinely rewarding. Choose Merzouga if sleeping in a desert camp under a sky of stars is your non-negotiable: nothing on the Morocco circuit matches the scale and silence of Erg Chebbi at dawn. Ideally, do both — the classic Route des Kasbahs links Ouarzazate to Merzouga in one extraordinary drive via Skoura, the Dadès Gorge, Todra Gorge and the Ziz Valley.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How far is Ouarzazate from Marrakech?

Ouarzazate is approximately 200 km from Marrakech — around 3.5 to 4 hours by car via the Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass (N9). The road is paved but winding; allow extra time in winter when snow can affect the pass. Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ) has occasional charter flights from Europe.

How far is Merzouga from Ouarzazate?

Merzouga is approximately 350 km from Ouarzazate — around 5.5 to 6 hours by road via the Route des Kasbahs (through Skoura, Dadès Gorge, Tinerhir and Todra Gorge). This route is one of Morocco's most scenic drives and is included in nearly every 3-day southern Morocco tour.

Is Aït Benhaddou worth visiting?

Absolutely. Aït Benhaddou is one of Morocco's finest UNESCO World Heritage Sites — a 17th-century ksar (fortified village) of stacked mud-brick towers on a hillside above the Ounila River. It is 30 km from Ouarzazate and has appeared in Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, The Last Temptation of Christ and Game of Thrones. Allow two hours for a guided walk inside.

What is the best time to visit Merzouga for desert camping?

October to April is ideal. Daytime temperatures are comfortable (15–28°C), and nights are cold but spectacular — clear skies and zero light pollution make for extraordinary stargazing. Avoid July and August when midday temperatures at Erg Chebbi exceed 45°C. March brings occasional Saharan wildflowers to the dune edges.

Do I need a 4×4 to visit Ouarzazate or Merzouga?

No — both are reachable on fully paved roads in a standard car. Ouarzazate is on a tarmac national road from Marrakech; Merzouga's Erg Chebbi dunes extend right to the edge of a paved road. A 4×4 is only needed if you want to explore the piste tracks between dune camps or venture into the deeper desert beyond the main dune field.
